Disc Golf
Yeah, you heard me right... “Disc Golf”, not “Ball Golf”....
I’ve always liked playing Disc Golf, I started played it in High School at Oak Grove (the first Disc Golf course in the world) when I was younger (around 1979 or 80) and it’s always just been kinda in my life as a fun thing to do. I’ve been getting back into Disc Golf lately so I thought I’d make a little page of information about it. It’s inexpensive to play cause most courses are setup in local parks and are totally FREE to play at. When I first started playing we all just played with our standard Frisbee discs, (you know, the kind you play catch with) but we learned quickly that the guys with “real” golf discs could throw farther and more accuracy. I wouldn’t want to play catch with a real golf disc, hard plastic.
Discs
The main thing you need is a decent disc to play with.
Golf discs are only around $10 or $15. I get discs online from
dtworld.com - Discovering The World.
Golf discs are different from regular Frisbee discs, they are a little smaller, shaped different, and are made of harder plastic to get through trees and such. They fly much faster and farther than standard Frisbee discs.
I carry a disc bag with drivers, approach discs and putters. The different styles of discs fly differently and I pick the disc based on the situation.
Targets
Targets are wire baskets on poles with chains hanging to them.
Basically you throw the disc at the chains and they direct it into the
basket. The chains make a distinctive “ching” noise when you hit um.
The one to the left is a Disc Golf Association MACH V™ Disc Golf basket, and the one on the right is a INNOVA DISCatcher® PRO Disc Golf Target.
There are a few other types as well, but mostly I see these types of holes at the disc golf courses in my area.
Courses
I live in La Crescenta, California, just North of Los Angeles. The closest Disc Golf course to me is Oak Grove in Pasadena, and I play at Sylmar. I’ve also played at Whittier Narrows and La Marada. In Southern California there is also Wrightwood, Long Beach, Huntington Beach, Azusa, Anaheim, Tustin, Cerritos, San Diego and a bunch in Ventura.
